Game park & Nature Reserve

THE WATERBERG

The Waterberg is situated in the Limpopo province of South Africa and consists of spectacular Bushveld and Savannah along the Waterberg Mountain Range. The name comes from the ability of the mountains to store water like a sponge which is slowly released into several streams and rivers throughout the year. The Waterberg has a rich history and artifacts dating back to the Stone Age have been found at Makapans Valley World Heritage Site. About half of the Waterberg area of 14500 sq.km is an Unesco Biosphere Reserve which stretches from Marakele towards Wonderkop Nature Reserve north of the town of Marken. The landscape and flora is unique and is one of only two savanna biospheres of its kind in the world – the second being in Tanzania. Vaalwater is the only town on the higher plateau of the Waterberg. The other towns are situated around the Waterberg Mountains. The sour grass veld is not ideal for farming which explains the abundance of game farms in the area.
